Summarize a PDF with AI

Get a reliable summary of a long PDF (a report, paper, or set of notes) without spending an hour reading it yourself, while knowing exactly which step involves uploading your document externally.

Prerequisites

A PDF file, A Google account (required for NotebookLM)

Estimated time

5-10 minutes

Cost

Free, within NotebookLM's free-tier daily limits (50 chat queries/day, 3 Audio/Video Overviews/day, verified 2026-09-18).

Steps

  1. 1.
    PDF Metadata Viewer

Check the PDF's title, page count and author metadata first — a quick sanity check that you have the right file before uploading it anywhere.

  2. 2.
NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook) (external AI tool)

Upload the PDF as a source, then ask for a summary — or use the built-in Audio/Video Overview if you'd rather listen than read.

  3. 3.
    Word Counter

If you need the summary to fit a length limit (a briefing, an email), paste it here to check the word count.

Quality checks

  • Cross-check 2-3 specific facts, numbers or dates from the summary against the original PDF — AI summaries occasionally misstate a specific figure even when the overall gist is right.

If something goes wrong

  • If the summary misses something important, ask a more specific follow-up question grounded in the same uploaded source, rather than starting over with a vague re-request.

Privacy

Your PDF is uploaded to Google's NotebookLM in this workflow — that step is not local processing, unlike our own PDF tools (merge, split, rotate, delete pages), which never upload anything. Only use the AI step with documents you're comfortable sharing with Google.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do this without uploading my PDF anywhere?
Our own PDF tools (merge, split, page tools) never upload your file, but they don't summarize content — that requires an AI model reading the document, which means uploading it to whichever AI tool you use.
